Why people call us for Appliance & WEEE

Fridges can't go in a skip

Old fridges and freezers contain regulated refrigerants. Skips won't accept them, and illegally dumped appliances can lead to fines.

The council won't collect white goods

Most councils charge a collection fee, have long waiting times, or won't collect at all. They sit in the kitchen for months.

Working items feel wrong to bin

A functioning washing machine or fridge should go to someone who needs it. You just need a way to make that happen.

WEEE rules feel complex

Monitors, laptops, printers and phones all fall under the WEEE directive. Most people don't know where the responsibility sits.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the thought of clearing out a loved one’s home? Sorting through years of memories is hard enough without worrying about proper Appliance & WEEE Disposal.

We understand how stressful this bereavement process can be for families.

Since founding Coln Clearances as a family-run business in 2014, providing reliable, respectful, and affordable house clearance services across Cheltenham has been our main focus. Standard skips will legally refuse to accept many common household items. Our WEEE certified and Registered Waste Carrier licensed team handles these exact items for you, including:

  • Old fridges and freezers
  • Washing machines and tumble dryers
  • Televisions and monitors
  • Small electricals and bedside electronics

The WEEE directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) requires strict environmental compliance for all this electrical waste. This ensures harmful components are stripped out safely. We collect these appliances across Cheltenham, Charlton Kings, Prestbury, Cirencester, Tewkesbury, and the wider Cotswolds.

Everything is handled on a simple per-item fixed-price basis. Certified processors then receive every single piece of equipment.

Appliance & WEEE Disposal: Why It Matters

Our duty of care protects you from the very real threat of fly-tipping fines. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs reported over 1.26 million illegal dumping incidents in England during 2024 and 2025. Councils and generic man-and-van operators cannot legally receive this waste without WEEE certification.

We provide a legal waste transfer note on request to give you complete peace of mind. Pre-2004 fridges and freezers contain highly regulated CFC and HCFC refrigerant gases. Illegally dumping these units is classified as a Category 1 environmental offence.

Our certified disposal process ensures these dangerous greenhouse gases never leak into the atmosphere.

If your old appliance ends up dumped by an unlicensed carrier, you could personally face a Magistrates’ Court fine of up to £50,000 under current UK duty of care rules.

Using a licensed professional removes that legal risk entirely.

What We Handle Under WEEE

We take the heavy lifting off your shoulders by clearing out almost any electrical item. This service is especially helpful when clearing an entire estate full of outdated goods. The official WEEE categories cover everything from bulky kitchen white goods to small bedside electronics.

  • Large domestic appliances: fridges, freezers, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, ovens, and hobs.
  • Screen displays: TVs, monitors, and old projectors.
  • Small kitchen appliances: microwaves, kettles, toasters, and blenders.
  • IT equipment: laptops, desktops, printers, and heavy servers.
  • Home electricals: hair dryers, irons, vacuum cleaners, and power tools.
  • Cables and small electronics: chargers, adaptors, old phones, and remote controls.

Fixed, Per-Item Pricing

Our pricing structure is designed to be completely transparent for local families. Every single appliance is quoted individually so you know exactly what the job costs. A single fridge freezer collection is straightforward and priced quickly by phone or email.

We offer a helpful bulk discount for multi-appliance jobs, such as a probate clearance or a full kitchen refit. Hidden fees are simply not part of the deal. The refrigerant handling, disposal fee, and WEEE processing are all built into the initial quote.

What Happens to Your Appliances

Our team sorts every collected item carefully at the local depot. Less than 10% of what is collected actually goes to a licensed landfill disposal site. The vast majority of items find a second life or get broken down for raw materials.

  1. Working, safe appliances: We route fully functional items to local reuse charities like the British Heart Foundation on Suffolk Street or Emmaus Gloucestershire. This is always the first-choice outcome to support the Cheltenham community.
  2. Non-working appliances: Broken units are dismantled for parts and valuable materials. We ensure metals go straight to recycling facilities, while plastics are sorted for reprocessing at local sites like Printwaste on Tewkesbury Road.
  3. Refrigerant-containing units: Fridges, freezers, and air conditioners are drained by certified processors under heavily regulated conditions. This step extracts the harmful compressor oil and greenhouse gases safely.
  4. Final disposal: Our main goal is to keep landfill use to an absolute minimum. Only what genuinely cannot be reused or recycled goes to licensed disposal.

Mattresses: A Special Case

Mattresses are not technically WEEE, but they remain one of the most commonly dumped items in the UK. Our local council tips often struggle with these bulky items because the mixed materials jam standard shredding machines.

Diverting 100% of mattress components from landfill solves this frustrating problem. The breakdown process separates every single useful material. We manage this exact separation process for Cheltenham families and Airbnb operators so they can avoid expensive skip fees.

  • Springs and metal frames go directly to scrap metal recyclers.
  • Foam and padding goes to insulation manufacturers to become carpet underlay.
  • Our handlers ensure the outer cover fabric is sent away for specialized textile recycling.
  • Wood frames and internal slats are chipped for board manufacture or biomass fuel.

Appliance & WEEE FAQs

Why can't I just put my old fridge in the skip?
Because it's not legal. Fridges and freezers contain regulated refrigerants (HFCs and older gases), which must be handled by certified WEEE processors. Illegally dumped fridges are a criminal matter and, in most cases, skip hire companies won't accept them either.
How much does it cost to remove a fridge or washing machine?
Per-item pricing is transparent, given on the phone or by email in minutes. Multi-appliance discounts apply if you're doing a kitchen refit or a full house clearance. Everything is fixed at quote stage.
Do you take TVs and small electronics too?
Yes, all small electricals fall under the WEEE directive and we handle them the same way. Laptops, monitors, printers, kettles, microwaves, even old landline phones. On request, hard drives can be securely wiped or destroyed.
Can working appliances go to charity instead?
Where they're genuinely in working order and there's a receiving charity, yes. Ian coordinates with local reuse organisations across Cheltenham and the Cotswolds so appliances that still work don't get scrapped.
What about old mattresses?
Mattresses are one of our specialties. We divert 100% of mattress components from landfill, springs to metal recycling, foam to insulation manufacturers, cover fabric to textile recycling. It's why so many Cheltenham families use us over a skip.
